Have you ever thought about how laundry affects the eco-system?
Laundry uses lots of water, detergent, energy… and what else?
By washing synthetic fabrics (*1), it releases tons of Microplastics!
If all clothes on this planet are made from natural fabrics, we don’t need to worry about microplastics (caused by laundry). However, the reality isn’t. By washing Synthetic fabrics, the tiny plastic fibres break off from clothes and it goes all the way to the ocean. This tiny plastic fibres are the Microplastics.
~ So how much Microplastics are released by laundry? -

According to a research team from the University of California at Santa Barbara, a city of 100,000 inhabitants releases a wash-related volume of Microplastics equivalent to 15,000 plastic bags. (*2) Which could mean that Tokyo may be responsible for more than 2,110,000 plastic bags, everyday. (*3) This Microplastic is released in the ocean, fish eat it, affects plants and it comes all the way to us humans, into our body. It’s all connected.
- Stop Microplastic by using Guppyfriend Washing Bag -
We need to stop the cycle of Microplastic, and one way to do it is to use Guppyfriend Washing Bag.
It’s simple and easy.
-Put your Synthetic fabric clothes into the Guppyfriend Washing Bag and wash as usual -
That’s it.
Once laundry is done, remove the captured plastic fibres and dispose. Easy-peasy, right?
Doing laundry became so refreshing and comfortable from the day I started using Guppyfriend Washing Bag. It’s winter so I put my fleece jacket into the Guppyfriend Washing Bag☺
One thing got me worried when I first started using the washing bag.
That was that I could not find any Microplastic fibres in the washing bag.
“Hmmmm, am I using this bag the wrong way?” I thought.
However, it turned out that there was nothing to worry about.
According to the FAQs(*4), the design and the structure of the washing bag, fewer microfibres break off during washing. So not finding any microfibres means that your clothes are protected and it’s a good thing.
You can also find washing tips to reduce microplastic pollution in the Guppyfriend official website.
