[BC Interview] Behind the brands - CELEMENT LAB.
There are over 20 brands that Borderless Creations are sourcing from. We’ve introduced the brands and their products but who are the people behind the brands? What are their thoughts?
We asked the same 10 questions to all the brands so that you can get a better understanding of the brands and their stories.
Today we interviewed Mr. Swank Chen, the Founder of CELEMENT LAB.
Q1) What triggered you to tackle ethical and sustainable issues?
A1) When I see how many products are used so casually and so quickly tossed away as waste, it makes me wonder why on earth would I want to make a product that’s so easily discarded or replaced. This is why CELEMENT brand insists on manufacturing unique products that are not only functional but also beautiful, encouraging people to treat them with care and store or display them properly when not in use.
To be honest, the CELEMENT brand has not come about with sustainable issues as its main goal. But using eco-friendly raw materials, and reducing losses during manufacturing, those are things we bear in mind every day.
Q2) What has changed from when the brand started and now?
A2) I am not sure what has changed in the world around us. But I do know that there is a group of people that use and support CELEMENT products, and that’s the biggest reason for us to keep growing and stay the course.
Q3) What was the hardest part of developing your brand? On the contrary, what was the best thing about continuing the brand?
(CELEMENT is soft concrete, the new word is combined CEMENT and ELEMENT.)
A3) The hardest part has been to communicate the properties of our material. The main core of our CELEMENT brand is the creative idea of using composite materials. It is difficult to convey through visuals and text the complex tactile experience of those materials. We’re constantly working on communicating the quality of the texture and the using experience.
However, people are gradually getting to know CELEMENT’s features after the exhibition and markets. The happiest thing about running our brand is seeing that people fall in love with our products, express their praise and recommend it to their friends.
Q4) Tell us about someone that you know who are working on being sustainable. What kind of activity/initiative is this person doing?
A4) I recommend Shane from Kamaro’an, a Taiwanese brand. Their design is meaningful for Taiwan and I like it very much. They strike a great balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.
Q5) What is your favorite quote? And why do you like it?
A5) “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.”
by Steve Jobs.
Wouldn’t you agree it’s true? When we realize that there is only a little time left in our lives, then we would go ahead with our lives, our work, our lover, etc. in a much more straightforward fashion, which might be the best way to prevent regret.
Q6) Tell us about any books or movies that have had a great influence in your life!
A6) Naruto. Although it is a manga, it is definitely a classic.
His passion, hard work and perseverance have always been my spiritual food. It speaks of the value of partners and teamwork, and has affected my approach to work. I really recommend it to everyone!
Q7) If you can eat ANYTHING now, what would it be?
A7) Otoro sushi, amazing food!
Q8) If you can go ANYWHERE now, where would you like to go?
A8) Iceland. To chase the polar lights and experience the incredible nature there.
Q9) Any other country or city you want to live?
A9) Japan. I really like Japan. I’ve been there three times, although it was just for exhibition and work.
Q10) What are you most mindful of when you think of your lifestyle?
A10) I think it is very important to eat well and rest well. For me, the workaholic that I am, there’s no boundary between work and life, and my eating times are also not fixed at all. I often go hungry or I suddenly binge. Going forward, I wish I could live healthier for my lover and the brand.
